Scenic Tours around Cooma

The Snowy Mountains Highway starts at Tathra on the Sapphire Coast about 1½ hours drive from Cooma and runs on through the Kosciuszko National Park to Tumut. The Alpine Highway starts at Cooma and runs up through Berridale, Jindabyne and Thredbo. These tours pass through some of the most magnificent mountain and coastal areas in Australia. The snow gums and wildflowers of the mountains and rain forests and white sand beaches of the South Coast, make each of these tours a enjoyable and memorable experience.

Tour 1:  Kosciuszko National Park – North Section.

Cooma – Adaminaby – Mt. Selwyn – Yarrangobilly Caves – Talbingo - Cooma

This self-drive tour takes approximately five hours and passes through the Northern section of the Kosciuszko National Park. It passes through the country village of Adaminaby, home of the ‘Big Trout’. The next stop will be the alpine scenery of Mt. Selwyn of the three main ski fields during the winter season. You will then pass a number of smaller alpine lakes on your way to the Yarrangabilly Caves.While the caves are some of the most beautiful in Australia, the landscape above ground is truly awe inspiring and well worth taking the time for a wander, you never know what you will come across. Allow reasonable time to explore these fascinating and unusual caves. A Guided tour of the caves is available on some days.

A good stop for lunch would the high country town of Talbingo on the shores of the Blowering Dam. If you wished to go on a little further, the town of Tumut is only about 45 kilometers further on.

Tour 2:    The Sapphire Coast

Cooma – Nimitabel – Bemboka – Bega – Tathra – Merimbula - Cooma

Just 1 ½ hours South–East of Cooma lies the beautiful Sapphire Coast with it pristine beaches, old growth forests, National Parks and coastal towns and villages. During a comfortable one day drive you will pass the historic flour mill (1865) at Nimmitabel. This town boasts one of the best bakeries in the country. After a pleasant drive down Brown Mountain with its panoramic views of the Bega valley, you will come to the  picturesque town of Bemboka . From Bemboka it just a 40 minute drive to the white sand beaches of the Sapphire Coast.

After visiting the Bega Cheese factory (This is a must do) there is a wonderful scenic route from Bega to Tahra and along the Sapphire Coast Drive to Merimbula. This town is absolutely the jewel of the South Coast with its whale watching, wharf and lake fishing, tourist shops, boardwalk cafes and relaxed coastal atmosphere.

Tour 3:    The Alpine Way  -  Mt. Kosciuszko

Cooma – Berridale -  Lake Jindabyne – Perisher Valley – Thredbo -Mt. Kosciuszko – Cooma

This tour is truly an alpine experience and is about 5½ driving time. There is much to see so it’s best to start out early. After visiting the township of Jindabyne and getting your photos of the lake, take the Kosciuszko Rd up past Sawpit Creek to Perisher Valley. At Charlottes Pass you will experience some of the best mountain scenery in the world.
